A kindness project...
1000 Hearts is a kindness project that I started in 2016 because I wanted to spread some love and compassion.
Inspired and driven by my work in the non-profit sector, I felt a need to do some thing that offered love in an all-inclusive way with no cost, no conditions and no limits. The project is based around small pocket hearts which are handmade from wool felt and stitched with love and good intentions. These hearts are then offered to people as a symbol of compassion, care and kindness.
When I began 1000 Hearts, I hand-stitched one thousand pocket hearts for people who nominated themselves as distributors to give them away in random acts of kindness. When messages started pouring in from recipients, I was astounded to realise the power of these little hearts which people carried as talismans of love, courage, hope and comfort.
Many people asked me for additional hearts that they could share with others and lots of people started making and distributing hearts themselves. A community started to grow from my small act of love; a community where kindness and connection are valued and hearts are healed.
Since the project started, I’ve made over 8000 hearts and many others have joined in, creating a global network of “heartists” committed to spreading the love.Hearts have been donated to people struggling with a wide variety of challenges like loneliness, mental illness, sickness and bereavement.
I’ve sent hearts to people impacted by the Orlando nightclub shooting, the bombing in Manchester and the Grenfell Tower inferno in London. I’ve also offered thousands of hearts to charities, services and individuals who need a bit of love.
Here at 1000 Hearts, we believe that kindness can change the world. This is a place to learn about and practice self-compassion and random acts of kindness. If you believe in the power of love, you’re in good company here.
Thank you for being here.
