The structure of 1000 Hearts
For those interested in the business nitty gritty, this is for you. I believe in transparency, especially in a business which takes donations to support community work.
When I decided to invest my time and energy in 1000 Hearts full-time, I explored many options for its structure, including registering it as a charity. After seeking advice from many people wiser than me, I set it up as a company which operates as a social enterprise.
This means that 1000 Hearts is registered as a business that operates in a similar way to a charity regarding use of profits. It can be called a profit-for-purpose or a social enterprise.
1000 Hearts draws income from shop sales and donations. Once costs are covered (yes, this includes my wage), profits are invested into our community.

Community Work
1000 Hearts exists to make the world better by putting kindness out there. That's why I initially made one thousand pocket hearts, and that's the reason I keep going. The research and personal stories add up to powerful evidence that kindness improves wellbeing and makes us happier.
Accessibility and inclusivity are key, so my goal is to make sure anyone can access 1000 Hearts. Here's how I do it:
- Community Hearts are freely available for anyone
- Free community workshops
- Charity discount on bulk supplies
- Providing free or discounted materials where cost is a barrier
- Supporting eligible schools to get involved by providing materials and guidance at no cost
As a small business, the support I provide is limited, but as 1000 Hearts grows, so does my capacity to support our community. Please email me with any requests or queries.

How to Get Involved
Anyone can get involved in 1000 Hearts and we love to see our community growing.
There are lots of ways you can get involved:
- Make hearts
- Share hearts where kindness is needed
- Start a group
- Donate to support our community work
- Contribute hearts to a good cause
There are a few things I ask of you when you become a part of the 1000 Hearts community, and you can read more about them here.
